Attached a few old photos that I found from my recruiting tour at RAF CIO
Southend 1982 - 1985. Alan Knowler
It shows some of the service personnel who participated in the Southend Town
Show in 1984, which was held on Southend sea front opposite the old Kursal
Entertainment Park. I'm on the left of the photograph and the 2 NCOs on the
right were from RAF P&SS Support Squadron who came along with a RAF Police
Range Rover which unfortunately kept breaking down, much to our dismay. I have
memories of us all frequently bump starting it on the seafront much to the
amusement of passersby.
CIO Southend was actually located in Westcliff on Sea and at some time
previously the building was a Royal Navy Reserve Unit. I would imagine now that
its been demolished and has either shops or offices on the site.
an aerial view of the show on the same location in 1983
which I took from a Gazelle Helicopter that we had on the opening day of the
show to fly local VIPs. We even arranged for a RAF Marine Craft boat to turn up
at high tide and we ferried VIPs and interested potential candidates out to it
in a small inflatable boat. The Jaguar aircraft in the display was actually made
from fibreglass and wood but the cockpit was fitted out the same as a real
aircraft and it looked like the real thing.
